MBR Problem
If the HDD does not have an Overlay, or if the Overlay is not in use and does not use the 63 sector offset (most haven't used them since about 1995), fdisk /mbr shouldn't hurt anything. It simply builds and writes a standard DOS Boot Record. If an Overlay is present, doing an fdisk /mbr simply replaces the

(I've given him a copy of Fprot but I'm not sure if this checks the HD MBR) Frankly, this doesn't sound like a Master Boot Sector virus. It sounds like a hardware error: RAM loose or bad; CPU fan not spinning; Badly seated cards; Power supply faulty - that sort of thing. Formatting doesn't remove MBR viruses.
